THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.
THE DOWNFALL OF A THRONE. Not the least surprising feature of the dramatic situation that has de/veloped in Spain is the suddenness a nd rapidity of the climax. The failure of the Republican conspiracy at the end of last year, and the emphatic refusal of Alfonso to abdicate, had produced the impression that all danger was over and that the, safety of the Throne was secured. But tfie discontent of the people was too deeply seated to he allayed, and the decision ot the King to grant a Constitution and to convene a national Parliament appears to have given them their opportunity. Neither Church nor Army seems to have stretched out a hand to save the tottering Monarchy, and', when the final crisis was reached Alfonso bad to face only two alternatives abdication or civil war. No doubt this sudden collapse of "a monarchy fifteen, centuries old” was due chiefly to the* King’s mistaken efforts to "impose, the ideas ol the eighteenth century upon the twentieth.” —Press Comment.
