ALnssey as Reform candidate at the by-election. Fifteen names were before the executive. A resolution was also carried opposing the fusion of the Reform and Uniled Parties. UNEMPLOYED WOMEN. A report states the response to appeal made on “Poppy Day” by the Public has been a very generous one, particularly in view of the present economic conditions. As a result of the effort the Returned Soldiers’ Association will be in a position to provide a considerable amount of assistance to unemployed returned soldiers. FOUND DEAD. WELLINGTON, April 27. On Saturday morning, Michael Mur, ra.v, a married man, aged 35, employed as a lunneiler at Tawa Elat was found dead in a gully eighty yards from the road on Taylor’s farm, Glen side. He had a wound in the throat. Murray was a returned soldier and had been employed as a tiinnoller for some years. He was a popular man, quiet, and levelheaded. R ACEH <>RS EG'S DEATH. In asking for a week's remand, Chief Detective Cameron stated tho aroused was arrested with the younger youth on Reilly's roof, while attempting to enter the premises of Hayinan and Company. Gaffney bolted after his capture, and when being recaptured, threw a knife at the detective. There would he six charges of shop breaking. The accused were remanded in custody. FALSE PRETENCES. DUNEDIN. April 27. At the police court, Patrick Corbett on five charges of false pretence respecting cheques issued to publicans at Riverton arid Dunedin, was remanded till the afternoon. It was stated accused left with the Main Body as a private and was promoted to an officer's rank on the field. Ffe was subsequently awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantly and later was wounded. Accused was in a drunken condition when arrested
