The channel at the mouth of the river at the present is very shallow, a sandbank being in existence ainiost across the entrance, which is wide, but has very little depth, the actual channel being well to the south.

Casual visitors to Cass Square on Anzac Day passed favourable comment on the appearance of tfie Cenotaph plot, which is kept always in very pleasing order, reflecting every credit, on those concerned. The authorities are certainly to be commended for the care and attention given a very sacred plot to the community.
An earthquake was experienced on Saturday night at 8.7 o’clock. It was of ;* sharp nature, and was generally felt. At the Anzac Concert which was in progress at Princess Theatre many of the audience became uneasy for the moment. The shake was sulficient to make buildings creak and swav the chandeliers.
The “Argus” says:—A sharp earthquake shock was, felt in Grey mouth on Saturday about B.S p.m. The direction appeared to be ironi. north-west to south-east. A few mild tremors succeeded the first one. Yesterday morning about six o’clock a couple ol very light tremors were felt. The shocks appear to have been of nearby origin.

The death took place on Friday afternoon of Air Christopher Hewison, at his residence. Gladstone Siding. 1 1,> had been ailing for about two years, lie leaves a widow and two sons. Percy and Joseph, both of Gladstone. Tile late Mr Hewison iviis 64 years of age, and had resided at (-ladstone for the last 12 years. The funeral look place on Sunday to Karmo Cemetery.

At about 3.30 a.m. yesterday morning, an outbreak of fire was discovered at the residence of Mr Richard Armstrong. Carroll Street, Runanga. Tho lire had a good hold when discovered, and the house, a five-roomecl one, with all tile furniture, was totally destroyed. The insurances on the building were not ascertainable yesterday. A band of willing helpers kept the fire from obtaining a hold of Mr F l . Oakley’s residence next door, but the later house was damaged a good deal on one side. A large quantity of furniture was removed from Oakley’s home and it is understood that Mrs Oakley lost a purse containing a considerable sum of money.
The Westland Competitions open on Thursday week at the Princess Theatre. The judges will lie Mr Byron Brown of Wellington for elocution; Mr Arthur Lilly. A.R.C.O. of Christchurch for music (vocal and instrumental) and Miss Muriel Waugh of Christchurch for the dancing section, which this season is enlarged considerably. The time table will be available, this week and owing to the number of entries the eight days and nights of the Competitions will be well occupied. Both Princess Theatre and All faints' Hall will he in steady use. After the opening night, the evening programmes, excepting for demonstration concerts, will be at All Saintfe’ Hall, the Theatre not being available. Members, season and day tickets are now on sale and should be availed of to assure the financial success of the festival.
