INESTI.MARLE SERVICES. LORD IRWIN LEAVES INDIA. (Official Wireless.) RUGBY, April 1 8. Ford Irwin left India to-day for England at the conclusion of wluit the King, is a message of appreciation, and congratulation, described as- “live years of exceptional difficulty” as Viceroy. Many tributes to his services to Britain and India during that momenlous period are contained in the Press ol both countries to-day. The “Manchester Guardian” says; “Ho will be remembered in India not because lie came then? as a icpiesentative of a great Power, but because in the discharge ot bis duties as Viceroy lu- exemplified all that was best in the civilisation to which he belonged and in the religion which be billowed.” The “Daily News,” referring specificaliv to the truce and the negotiations with Gandlij, says: “He hazarded the enormous personal influence which he had won in Inda in the cause of peace, and history will record that in so doing lie- did an inestimable service both to India and to Great Britain.” Regarding Lord Willingdon. the “Dailv News” expreses the beliel that lie will he a worthy successor to Lord Irwin, and says that few living men are better qualified than the new Viceroy to discharge this task. The “Daily Herald” says: “Lord Irwin had the imagination to realise, where others had still tailed to ii-aliso, ihe need for a hold policy ol satislaction and appeasement. He has had tin- courage to carry that police through. He leaves India with a reputation high among the greatest Viceroys and with the good wishes of millions tor his future.”
