CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD
The Canterbury Education Hoard met at Christchurch on Friday. Air \Y. A. Banks presiding. Present were • Messrs R. Wild. H. .J. Rignell. J. VC Preen, W. P. Spencer, G. W. A»”nitago, .1. .1. Hurley, C. S. Thompson. W. Johnson, J. G. Gow, and ,S. R. F.vison. Correspondence was rcceivel from Grey mouth regarding the transfer of Standard VI pupils to the Technical School. It was resolved that, in view of the objection of the local committee to the loss of so many pupils, and im protest to the .Minister, consideration of the proposed change he held over for a month. Tlie Agricultural and Manual and Technical Committee reported that the West Coast Agricultural ai'ul Pastoral Association’s Shield competition was won by Ngalicre (130). with Ru Ru and Ram-town second equal (123). Handwork Supplies for 1932.—Advice has been received from the Department stating that no orders for Handwork Supplies are being placed by thy Department for 1932- The communication recommends that any surplus material held hv schools should l>e recalled to the boards stoie so that some stocks may he on hand for handwork purpose during 1932. Tt i« also suggested that the fullest use possible should lie made ot waste materials, f propost' to send out a circular to all schools along the lines suggested by the Department; and further, advising that no supplementary issues of material will be made for tilts year.
Favourable comment was voiced by members on the provision in the Finance Bill giving boards power to refuse to employ married women subject to certain conditions. On the motion of Mr R. Wild, it was decided to forward a telegram to the Prime Minister congratulating him on bringing down the legislation. When the subject was raised, Mr SR. Kvison asked if the proposal gave the hoard the full power they wanted. The chairman (Mr W. A. Ranks) answered in the negative and pointed out the limitation in respect to teachers not having completed the required term of teaching following the period spent at training college. Mr ,J. W. Preen said that Uiry had now got what they had been lighting for for twenty years. After the meeting, Mr C. wirlthe secretary, said that the board already had power to refuse co appoint ■i married women provided the senior inspector agreed, but if he would not do so then they were obliged to appoint the highest graded applicant whether she was married or not. Mr Preen said that in the past, M almost every meeting of the Board, married women had been given positions. Now that the principle of not appointing married, women had been laid down, however, the position would he different. P"MF o-bdo-was against having two full-time wage earners in tho same household.
