For the week ended April 13, the total was 37,558. compared with 37,508, hit the previous seven days, an apparent decrease ol 40. Returns supplied by the Aimistei of Labour show that although new and ruiewcd a-p-plcations for work totul J 345 during the week 25,7d7 men qualified for and were placed in wm k uuuer the Unemployment Board’s second and fifth schemes, which meant that the rcai increase for the week was 230. With dependents: Auckland, 4317 without dependent 21J1; Wellington with dependents: 1i23, without depndent 1700; Chrisieliurch: with dependents, 2sob, without dependents, 18,87 ; Dunedin . with dependents 1200, without dependents 100, ■ Invercargill with dependents OSi, without dependents 430. Excluding men placed under the uhove mentioned schemes the position regarding registrations on April 13, was as follows:—Auckland 1318, AVe’lingtoii 807. Christchurch 1202, Dunedin 207, Invercargill 338, other towns 7700; total 11,791. CHRISTCHURCH, April 18. In order to make up for the time lost this week as a result ol the hitch that occurred in regard to the unemployment relief works, the City Council has made arrangements for 000 men to make a start on Monday morning. The men will lie kept on lor lour or live days. MASS MEETING. CHRISTCHURCH, April 10. At a mass meeting of the unemployed this afternoon, tint'following resolution was carried :—“That this mass meeting oi the unemployed calls on the Alliance of Unhour and the Trades and Labour Councils to take effectiveaction to obtain adequate relict lor the unemployed. DESTITUTE GIRLS. AUCKLAND, April 17. The National Council of women with the Y.W.C.A. opened a register a fortnight ago at the Y.W.C.A. Building, for unemployed girls, and 85J rogisteiatioiis have been recorded, and 473 registrations. A woman officer of the Hospital Board attends at intervals, with a view to assisting girls who are dcstitue.
