BRITISH GAS INDUSTRY
According to the “Times” trade and engineering supplement there are in Britain 1310 gas undertakings, ol which 997 are operated by companies, the remainder being municipally owned. Among them they use some 18.01)0.0(10 tons of coal per annum, and employ directly about 113.000 men, while the capital invested is in the neighbourhood of £200,000,000. They supply in the aggregate during the year over 320.000,000,000 cubic feet of gas. which on a thermal basis is equivalent to approximately 40,400,000.000 units of electricity, or more than 4 1 times tintotal quantity generated bv the electricity undertakings in the country in the course of a year. The carbonisation of 18,000,000 toils of coal results in th<production of about 13.000.00 u tons of coke, of which some 7,000.000 tons aril sell in tin- gasworks, 1,000,000 tons are exported, and the remainder is sold to the public 'and used for central heating and many otlu-r purposes. Like gas, coke i s a smokeless fuel, and the two have contributed greatly to the abatement, of the smoke nuisance, and thus helped to create cleaner and healthier towns.
