THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.
“HIGH FINANCE.” Air Lazzarini’s system of high finance as expounded to an amused House of Representatives, recalls a lecture on economics a few night ago. The economist used the following illustration: “A newly-married man opened at a bank an account for his bride, paid in £IOO, gave her a cheque book, and said, ‘Afy dear, be wise.’ Instead of being wise she tried to be clever. The difference between wisdom and cleverness is the same as the difference between a statesman and a political!. Th e lady, with three successive cheques, drew out all the money her loving husband had deposited. Having spent all, she went to the bank, pulled out her cheque book, and wrote another cheque. The clerk pushed it back, with ‘No Funds’ scrawled on it. ‘What docs that mean?’ she asked. ‘You have no money at present in the account,’ he explained. ‘I know that,’ she retorted, Mmt I still have twenty cheques!’ ” —Sydney paper.
