THOUGHTS OF THE TIMES.
FASCIST IDEALS. One of the most illuminating comments yet offered on the true inwardness of Fascism has just been supplied to tho world at large by tlie Italian Alinister of Justice. In setting forth the constitution of the newly reformed Assize Courts, Signor Roeco explains that henceforth the Court will consistof two Judges and five lay “assessors,” hut that the jury system will be abolished altogether For, “like all other Liberal institutions, it is of English origin, and therefore must bq abandoned by Fascism. Perhaps this statement is chiefly interesting as a complete revelation of’ the hostility of Fascism to democrary,. The system of trial by jury, thought historically English in origin, is even, more distinctively democratic, and the decision to abolish it in Italy proclaims th ( . implacable hatred of Fascism for all things that savour even remotely of democratic principles and practice. This is natural enough; for Fascism is merely a highly centralised and irresponsible despotism. —Northern Paper.
