JACOB JOHNSON
CLAIMS £SOO DAMAGES. (Australian Press Association) (Received 10.5 a.m.) CANBERRA. April 15. Jacob Johnson, one-time official of the Seamen’s Union is claiming £SOO from the Federal Government ns compensation for his imprisonment. Johnson was sentenced to six months imprisonment in 1928 for an offence under the Commonwealth Crimes Act. When the ease was mentioned in the House of Representatives subsequently. Mr Theodore alleged that “faked” evidence was adduced against Johnson. The Labour Party was in opposition at the time and pressed for an inquiry into the conviction. When Labour returned to office the matter was investigated. and the Acting Attorney-Gen-eral, Mr Daly, recommended to Cabinet that Johnson should be compensated.
