A startling experience fell to the lot of travellers on the WellingtonXapier mail train last week. when a thunderbolt fell with a loud explosion some 20 yards from the train, causing sufficient concern for the train to be stopped for a. brief while. The phenomenon is described as having provided a blue and orange flash of vivid Sight prior to the bolt reaching the ground, where there was a loud explosion. The train was near Oritigi. between Dannevfrke and Woodville at the time and the bolt fell some 20 yards from the lines. The guard stopood the train and brief investigations were made. No damage was caused by the occurrence.

The honesty of the Napier peupie is being very much appreciated by hank managers who have been busy since the earthquake re-establishing their records. The relieving manager of a bank which lest all its records said he had the greatest admiration for the people of Napier, who had given the hank so much assistance in the stupendous task of restoring lost records. "When he arrived in Napier, immediately after the earthquake, he considered that it would take some months to get the hank hack to normal, hut. thanks to the honesty and help of his clients, the task was practically '■omr.leted in seven weeks. Another hank manager stated: “At a time like this, when- the honesty and integritv of the Napier people are being put to so severe a test, it is being proved that the citizens’ hearts are of gold.' 1

Every yachtsman knows that the shag has a voracious appetite, says a northern exchange, but few would give' hjm credit for what he can do when necessity arises. The prodigious swallow of the bird was proved during some investigations made by Marine Department officers on the Kaipara Harbour, where fishermen complain that the flounder and mullet are being decimated. The officers shot a number of shags and examined their stomachs. The pied shag was the variety most fond of fish. Among the finds in the birds’ insides were two 4in flounders and two 6in mullet: one 12-Jin mullet: one lOin mullet; one mullet over 14in long; one 9in flounder. One small black shag was found to be full of ehrimns. of which 50 wholly undigested besides fragmentary ones, were counted. At a result of the lift in the seabed caused by the Napier earthquake the Kaka, one of the lighters owned by Messrs Richardson and Co., Did., which was at that time on the slip at Westshore. just high and dry, is now a considerable distance from the edge of the water, which is some 120 feet awav. It will ho necessary to build a slip this distance before the lighter can again be launched. It is not anticipated that this work can he earned out for some time, but when it is, the extended slipway will provide accommodation for two vessels instead of for one. as originally. In reference to various rumors that have been floating about- we are informed that the death of Dr. A. Hopkins was due to heart failure following a. severe, attack of diphtheria. We are also requested, in view of the fact Hint there is a considerable amount of diphtheria prevailing in the district at the present time, to draw attention to tlie urgent necessity for heads of families to have any throat troubles investigated without delay, as in spite nf the modern methods of treatment, there is always a grave danger of most serious results occuring, especially it prompt attention is not received.
