HIGH OFFICIALS
A RUMOURED ORGANISATION. M’ELLINGTOX. April 10* It has been reported that during the period when the Government's salary reduction proposals were before Parliament a number of high officials ot the public service formed an organisation to conserve their own interests. Inquiry shows that, this is m>t strict \ correct, hut that a number of responsible officers were in consultation on the subject oi retrenchment and salary economies, not for the purpose of protecting their own emoluments. Their advice was required by the Government, and they gave assistance in the examination of alternative proposals to show the effect on the general body of public servants. Impartial advice was tendered to the Prime Minister on the whole Subject, and although the work necessitated the organisation of a 'more or less informal body it is not in conflict with existing public service organisations', of which some of the officials concerned are members.
