HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, APRIL 10th. The Council met at 7.50 p.m. Present— Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), T. AV. Duff, E. AV. Heenan, G‘. Heinz, J. King and I). J. Evans. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. MOTION OF SYMPATHY. The Mayor referred in a very feeling manenr to the death of Dr. Hopkins and moved that the Council place on record its deep sense ot the loss sustained hv the community by the death of Dr. Hopkins and convey its deepest sympathy to the bereaved widow and family. The motion was carried in silence members standing. INAA 7 AR D COR RESP ONDENCE. From P. AV. Shannon, North Revel! Street, asking for a separate water connection to his residence,' as owing to water hammer and air pockets present joint connection is unsatisfactory.— Received; Overseer to report on cost. From R. Paterson, Hon. Secretary, R.S.A. application for permission to hold a concert in the Princess Theatre on Anzac night, on the satne lines as last year and for authority to charge an admission fee. Proceeds to be for the benefit of the local R.S.A. —Rcceived; request granted. From Secretary, Municipal Association of New Zealand, AA r ellington re investments of Sinking Funds in local body debentures.—Received. From Inglewood Eorough 'Council, asking for contribution of £1 Is towards legal expenses in connection with a case under section 7fl of the Rating Act respecting the liability- for rates where property is mortgaged to the Crown and which case was taken to the: Court of Appeal.—Received. From Secretary Hokitika Fire Board, notification, under section 21 of the Fire Brigades Act 1926 that the contribution of the Hokitika Borough Council to the Hokitika Fire Board for the year commencing on the Ist, April, 1931, will be £3OO payable in four quarterly instalments of £75 on the first days of April, July, and October, 1931, and January, 1932.—Received and agreed to. From L, P. K. Gooch, agreeing to pay the cost of sub-dividing Reserve No. 801 and applying for a lease of that part of the reserve now held by him on a tenancy, and also agreeing to pay annual rental of £9, plus rates. —Received. REPORTS. From Treasurer reporting receipts £434 3s 2d, payments £583 18s lid, debit balance £745 5s 6d.—Received. Accounts amounting to £6Bl 4s 8d Were passed for payment. FOREMAN’S REPORT. I beg to report the following work j-cinTiod out for the mouth. Most of j the time was occupied on. the relief ! works consisting chiefly of drainage. ! The East boundary drain was carried I up to Stafford Street on the Highway’s, j this drain is six feet wide and the . | same depth, parts of the excavating | being rough requiring a good deal of II blasting on account of timber, while six truck loads of stone was brought down from Kanieri by the Kanieri- | Hokitika Sawmills Co’s locomotive to j protect the outlet to the river. The t North boundary dr?in was carried up | to Fitzherbert Street, and the drain \ running south to Spencer Street clean- ; ed out, diverting the water from the [ cemetery to run out to sea, instead of \ down Sewell Street. The drains in the l Abattoirs paddocks were also cleaned | out and the patches of gorso cut, and. ■ the concrete yards were repaired. The j cutting on Jollie Street hill between jj Stafford and Hampden Street was put j through, Brittan Street drain between Stafford and Hampden Streets was cleaned out on the east side, and the surn.ph at the corner of Rolleston and Hampden. Streets was At the cemetery a good deal of the ground was cleared of growth and the paths cleaned, and some asphalting done. Growth was cut in Sale, AVeld, Rolleston, Stafford, an.d HampdenStreets ; also the North end of Fitzherbert was cleared, and the foopath, and water table cleaned. A water connection was put in at H. Steel’s jin AA r eld Street, and connections re- ; paired at E. Breeze’s, Park Street. T. | AVard's in Weld Street, Soldier’s Hall, I Sewell Street, and Mclntosh’s Red | Lion Hotel. A new pipe was put in the main at the corner of Sale and Stafford Streets, and the pipes repaired on the Lake road, where the Kanieri Electric cutting crosses. Down pipes were repaired in Tancred, and Sewell Streets. Crossings were put in at. E. Best’s in AA'eld Street, and at Fowler’s in Revel l Street. Two blow outs occurred nt Tucker Flat, on.e on the evening of the 10th.. and owing to the flood there it took u'i till 2 o’clock in the morning to get the water through, and another took place the following dav which we repaired. During the month ten chains of Gin. pipes were taken out on the £2~'Lake road and carted to Tucker Flat, and snigged along the present line to repair the worst places, these will be ...put in as soon as convenient. The doptli of water in the reservoir 1 averaged 3ft. 7in. for the month.
The Finance Committee reported in .‘favour of dispensing with overtime * .from date.—Approved. The manager of the Ahbntoirs reporting there were slaughtered during 3 ,March —17 cows, 27 heifers. 39 bul- - looks, 191 sheep. 290 lambs, 6 pigs, 13 calves. None condemned. Fees for month £7l 17s (same period last year year £GS 12s.)—■'Received. The Council discussed a number of
matters affecting th e water supply and the works in progress in connection with the relief works. Tt was stated by the Foreman, that the contractors for the grave! supply were bringing down a fall in the gravel pit and that then a supply of gravel would at once be available to effect a number of repair works already authorised to be carried out. The Council rose at 8.15 p.m.
