- - —— HELPING TMEI FARMER. The Prime Minister’s scheme for helping the ’farmer to buy fertilisers, is an attempt to assist national production in a period of low prices and consequent low incomes. The importance of fertilisers should be obvious to all, hut a few figures showing the increase in the quantity of material used for top-dressing are of interest. In 1920-21, the first year in which statistics were compiled, 4,38a,£U0 cwt was spread over 1,521,000 acres. In 1929-30 the acreage was 2,030,000, but the quantity of material used wa*» 8,875,000 cwt. In one. year the- quantity increased by a million hundredweight, which helps to account for tma increase in dairying production. The Government is informed that adequate application of top-dressing is being hindered by farmers’ poverty, so it is providing a sum to be lent out on adequate security through the Rural Intermediate Credit Board.
