An inquest was held at Westport on Thursday bv Coroner E. R. Fox on the body of Walter Anderson H oxford, whose death took place on Tuesday night. After hearing evidence the Coroner said there was no doubt the injuries sustained by the deceased in motor accident on December 27th, lmd a depressing effect on him and this was magnified i>v the breaking of bis engagement. He returned a verdict that “Walter Anderson Hoxford committed suicide b v .taking a dose of strychnine at AYestnort on April 7th. 1931. At the time he was suffering from the after effects of motor accident snm> months hack in which hp received head injuries. The breaking off of his engagement would further depress him.”

The occasional adwill be delivered hv Rev. Knowles Smith, and the benediction pronounced by the Ensign of the Salvation Army. The hymns will include “O .God Our Help.” Kipling’s “Recessional” and “O Valient Hearts.” The Band will play a funeral march, and the (Last Post wifi he sounded followed by the Reveille. Contributions will he taken up to defray costs of headstones on soldiers’ graves at the cemetery. Following the service, the parade will proceed first to the South African AYar Memorial and then to th« Cenotanh, which will he saluted, and wreaths laid. Afterwards the returned soldiers will march to the cemetery, 'where wreaths will he laid on - the graves of comrades and war workers. In the evening an Anzae Concert will he held in the Princess Theatre, where among other items the Anzae Anthem will he rendered by All Saints’ Choir. The weather cleared this morning. There are good Holds in all the events. Mr M. .McGnvht, whose emsin, Mr T. F. McCJavin, visited this district some time ago. has received word of his death in. the Fnited States through an accident. On February 11th. lie was crushed between two motor trucks at the Huiek colliery in the State of Montana. He leaves a widow and one daughter, and was 28 years of age. A reduction in the number of the members of Parliament is favour'd by the Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. A letter from the Associated Chambers was received at the last meeting of t.he Council of the Chamber asking if it favoured a reduction of members by half. The Council decided to reply that it would support a reduction. During the recent floods at West-! nort. a box was picked no from among tlie flotsam washed up on the beach. It seemed to have something inside i it, ami to open it one of the finders Crashed it against a tree trunk. On lie in it opeimd it was found to contain enough gelignite and detonators to cause a serious explosion. D is thought that the box was washed away from one of tile camps in the Build’, Gorge. j Fniest Leslie Neale, clerk to the Springs County Council, aged thirty- j nine veiij-s, was convicted and fined £lO and costs in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court for being intoxicated while in charge of a car oil Saturday evening. The Postmaster-General (the Hon. j j}. Donald) announces that I rom April 13 the postage oil newspapers for Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Irish Free State, Canada. The State Alines difficulty over the question of the preference clause in its application to three members ol the Miners’ Union, who are underground winchmeii, has not yet been settled. The Miners’ Union, at a meeting yesterday discussed a system to approach the Engine Drivers’ Union in order to obtain a conference under an independent chairman on the point at issue, hut an amendment was carried to the effect that the U"hm should await some official information from the engine drivers as to their attitude. The Engine Drivers’ Union is meeting this evening, when the matter will doubtless be considered.
