A COSTLY SERVICE. AUCKLAND, April 9. A statement in regard to the running of the .Maui Pumaiv v. ~s rec-Kmi from the Prime Minister by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. Mr Forbes said that the vessel had been run at a loss during the past year, and that it was the intention of the Government to opera! * the Maui Pomare unless or until a service was produced by private enterprise. “The Government must be losing about £2OOO per trip. The ship is carrying only about 26 per rent. o. her load each time,” said Mr Harvey Turner, in proposing that flu* letter he received.
