WINDWARD MYSTERY

BKPOJIT THAT WAS NOT MADE KNOWN.

The yawl Windward, which sailed from Chatham Islands for Wellington on January 6, and has not since been beard of, was probably lost near the New Zealand coast, for a similar vessel to the Windward was seen by the motor-ship Enton on January 15, when between thirty and forty miles south of Cape Pnlliser. The father of the skipper of the missing yacht, the Rev. W. S. Rollings. of Wellington, in a letter to a Wellington newspaper, says;—

“At the time of the arrival of the Enton in Wellington, news of the Windward was eagerlv awaited in yachting circles and by the general public. And had she been reported as nearing Wellington on January lo her non-arrival within the next day or so would have awakened anxietv, and led to a tug being sent out to search.

“Tt is nossible that in the heavy weather then sire might have been disabled and afloat. A search at that time would have been decisive either in rescue or in determining the fate of the yacht.

“The silence regarding the Enton’s reoo’-t may have seemed unimportant a+ the time. But in view of the public interest, and subseoeent anxiety, and the noble efforts of the Government denuntments to trace the yacht-, what apnears to. be a conspiracy of silence is incomprehensible.”
