ARREST ON SHIP
THEFT OF MONEY ALLEGED. AUCKLAND, March 30. Arrested on the M.arama prior to the departure of the vessel for Sydney on Friday, Matthew Joseph .Spellers, aged Twenty-five, a labourer, was charged with stealing £.170, the property of Leonard Lawrence Fitzgerald. At the time of the alleged offence, tli e accused was employed in Te Kuiti by Fitzgerald, who is a contractor. He was given three cheques amounting to £l7O to cash for the payment of his fellow employees’ wages, but instead of using the money as directed, the police allege that he went to the Wellington races. The sum of £4O had been spent. The accused was remanded for a week.
