The Conservative Party issues cor res. pondcuee following Sir Neville Chamberlain inviting Lord Beaverbrook to state the terms on which lie was to support the Conservative policy. Lord Beaverbrook wrote emphasising that he bad consistently urged the greatest attainable measure of Empire free trade or an economic unit. He asked For ail assurance that the programme proposed using the most efficient practical method for British manufacturing, and wheat and agricultural production. He points out that, he believes that duties on foreign foodstuffs was most effective, hut recognises that “‘prohibitions may be advantageous. and promises if the party at next election are prepared to ask for a mandate, and use all their methods, and do everything to assist in its fulfilment.” Sir Neville Chamberlain. replying, stated:—Air Baldwin has authorised me to say that you correctly stated the policy, and lie intends to employ all and any methods enumerated.
