A party in a motor ear who wore returning on Saturday night Irom Westport to Inangahua Junction had n very narrow escape front being buried under a- big slip about a couple of miles on the Westport side of the Junction Hotel. The slip, which car ried the road away for half a chain, came down about ten to fi teen feet in front of the car which was just slackened in time.
On Saturday itifternoon while proceeding out of Weld Street into David Street towards Gibson Quay a motoi ear driven hv Air Tern Muir failed to take the corner and ran over the hank into a- large hole in the side of the road. Tho driver was alone in the car at the time, and he suffered considerable injury to the body, and was taken to Westland Hospital for treatment. The car was considerably damaged as a result of the accident.
31 iss Yt’j'iiio Dawes. of Auckland, the youngest daughter of Mr and 31rs Dawes formerly residents of Hokitika, has just achieved tire perhaps unique distinction of having twice headed Xew Zealand in examination results. About twelve months ago she came first in the Xnrses’ examination, and she has iust repeated the performance by securing first place for the Maternity Nursing course. Miss V. Dawes was a graduate at the Auckland Unirersity, and took the 15.50. degree before commencing her hospital training. She lias joined the .Melanesian Mission, and loaves in the Southern Cross about the 7th. April to take up mission work in the Solomon Islands. On Saturday night the office of (.ho Colidon Town Board was broken into l, y a thief. The hack door was prized open, and attempt was niade to open the sale, which was turned around. Fvidcntly the intruder was disturbed, as lie left a bar behind him. Nothing however, was found to he missing yesterday when the matter was placed in the hands o. the police.
During the progress of the cricket match' at KOnieri yesterday a bid! struck the Kanieri wicket-keep-er above the pads. Almost immodia tel.v smoke began to issue from his pocket, and quickly removing Ids gloves, the ’keeper drew out from the pocket, a box of burning matches. Fortunately the player was not burnt and the flannels were not damaged to any extent. Evidently the friction caused by the impact wa s sufficient to iunite the matches.
Regarding the proposal to construct a bridge on the West Coast road over the Waimakariri River, near Dealer. Air AI. IT. AYynyard (motorists’ representative on the Alain Highways Board) told the half-yearly meeting of delegates to the South Island Motor Union on Tuesday at Christchurch, that the surveys had been completed and that the office work was now hoi mi undertaken. The plans had not yet come before the Alain Highways Board, hut would do so soon, after which an announcement would no doubt he made.
The funeral of the lnfe Mr dames Friend which took place yesterday afternoon at Mntainui was largely attended by friends from all over Westland. testifying to <ihe great esteem in which the deceased was held in the community. The cortege which left t lie deceased’s residence proceeded to the Ma.tainiii Church of England where a very impressive service was conducted by -the Rev. A. K. Warren who also officiated at the graveside. The chief mourners were the deceased’s widow, Messrs 45 ~ 0., H. and X. Friend. (brothers).
