The race was this time notable as being run on the finest and hottest, day in its history, and in perfect conditions generally, in the- presence of half a million people. Twcnty-eig-hit horses completed the first round, and twelve finished, which G quite unprecedented. The tinie'Aif the race 9min 32 4->sees is a record. The race was marred by two tragedies. ANGLICAN VERGER'S PRIZE. LONDON, March 27. A religious controversy has arisen in the Birmingham Diocese over Ui° Irish Sweep. This is owing to the Bishop, Dr Barnes, making a condemnation of the A’erger, who invested in the sweep. The priest in charge of St. Aidan's Church, declared that it is unfair and hypocritical for ecclesiastical dignatarios to condemn the A’erger lor his .rare and occasional flutter in the sweep, when rich men—whose wealth is the result of speculation—not onlv pass unrebuked, but arc actively patronised by the Church. The BiSiop’s statement, he said, indicaled biassed and muddled thinking.
