BOOKIE FINED
AUCKLAND, March 27
Harry Clifton gallery, the bookmaker who figured in the Mahood case (the latter was fined £lO yesterday for swindling Sallerv of £49) was to-day fined £75 for using his premises as a common gaming house, the Alagjstrate tuking into consideration the £3O fine inflicted on a lady clerk in February.
ASHBURTON LIQUOR SALE PROSECUTION. v;
ASHBURTON, March 27
At the Magistrate’s Court, Mr OrrAA’alker gave his reserved judgment in a ease in which AV. Robinson, licensee of tlie Chertsey Hotel } was charged with selling liquor at other than his licensed premises; and secondly, with aiding and abetting one Laffey in the offence of selling liquor without a license. On the first charge a fine of £2O was imposed. The second was dismissed. Laffey was the defendant's agent at Ashburton, and accepted verbal orders, which he telephoned to the hotel, the liquor being sent to Laffey, who , handed it to the purchasers. The Magistrate held that this constituted a sale at Laffey’s premises, and not at thp hotel.
YOUTH FOUND SHOT.
DUNEDIN, March 27.
A youth named Janies Johnson Baker, aged 19 years, a larm labourer, was found | dead in a paddock near the Portobello Road this afternoon, with a repeating rifle bgng beside him, and tlxere Was a bullet wound in his forehead. He had apparently been dead since' yesterday morning, when he was last seen shortly after 5 o’clock.

The Secretary-General of the Post Office advises that the following message had been received from Awarua radio station to-day: "At 9.21 p.m., 26th, we intercepted a call from the steamer “El Capitan” that the vessel was ashore at San Antonion Point, and required assistance.” At 9.52 p.m. the Oleai'water Radio, C'alnoruia advised the El Capitan that the tug Peacock and others had be«n sent to her assistance. • “

AUCKLAND, March 28. Mrs Mary Eliza Sandford, age 83, of Ferguson Street, Herne. Bay, was fatally injured when she was knocked down by a car in Ponstmby road yesterday evening. She alighted from her son’s car to shop and passing in front of ft stationary eiiv: to Hwe -thv road was struck by a ear driven KMervyn Mwre of Hamilton RonC. Herne Bay. A £4,000 ART UNION. TO RE-ESTABLISH HOSPITALS. NAPIER, March 26. The Hawkes Bay Hospital Board to-day accepted an offer to organise a £4,000 art union to raise a fund to re-establish the board’s hospitals.
