MARRIED WOMEN IN COURT. BIG RENTS AND LITTLE MONEY. AUCKLAND, March 24/ Two married, women,, both in - poor di-mi instances and mothers of large families, appeared in Court .this morning and pleaded guilty to shop-lifting charges.., In each ca-s e the Magistrate granted an application', by'Major, Gordon for an ordeir for the suppression of the names. One woman admitted stealing five pairs of children’s shoes, a childls froc* underskirt and a handbag, of. a total value of £4, from three shops; and the other admitted tlie theft of two pairs of children’s shoes, valued at 10s fid.
“Otie of these women has six children and pays £1 10s a week rent,” said Major Gordon. “Her husband is a casual worer. The case of the other woman is more unfortunate. She is the mother of ten children. Her husband has been earning £3 a week, but- is also a casual worker. They pay rent £1 10s.” “How can such people live on £3 a week and pay £1 10s rent,” said Air F. K. Hunt, S.-AI, “Has either of these women appealed for assistance P” Major Gordon replied that they find not. She intended to- take up their eases and assist them, The Magistrate adjourned the cases for one month.
