STATEMENT IX COMMONS. FATHER TURNEY’S SAFETY. RUGBY, March 23. Referring to the case of Father Turney, of St. Columba’s Mission at Ciouolntng, in the Chinese Province of Kiangsi. who has been held by bandits against ransom, Dr Hugh Dalton, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, stated in the House of Commons that it was feared that he was dead, though the tumour was not confirmed, and the Chinese Government had ordered the local magistrate to pay the full ransom.'Fhe British Minister was continuing to do everything in his power to effect the release of Father Turney if he was still alive. SOUTH AMERICAN MARKET. In reply to a question on the report of Lord d'Ahernon's mission to South America, Mr G. M. Gillett. Secretary of the Overseas Trade Department. said that effect had been given to the mission's recommendations concerning .participation in the British Empire Exhibition at Buenos Aires, reduction of cable rates, increased official representation, extension of cultural education and marketing methods, and aviation matters. Distinct benefit had accrued to trade ns a result of the mission in that the attention of British exporters had been focussed on the South American market.
