NAPIER HAPPENINGS. [by Telegraph, Per Press Association.} NAPIER, March 25. The Commissioners have intimated that parks and reserves will be kept up to normal as iar as possible, but some employees would have to go ofl. They desired to encourage sport grounds being prepared for winter games, but the Commissioners stated they were not out to dragoon the conscience of even a minority of the people. For that reason they thought it advisable to stop organised games on public areas. Work is proceeding on Napier South sewer system. Mr Hart, Engineer of Wellington, is to report on this problem which is one of magnitude, the changed levels making the task a difficult one.
FORMER CHAMPION GAOLED. AUCKLAND, March 25. The former New Zealand swimming champion, Aubrey Ernest Baird, aged 24, was gaoled for three months today for converting two motor cars to his own useRonald Lawrence Morrison, aged 27, a mechanic, on the same charge, was remanded for sentence. Bail'd was also guilty of stealing £4 10s in money at Ashburton. forgery charge. AUCKLAND, March 24. Andrew Murray, 31, engineer to the Wa.iterna.ta County Council, was arrested yesterday and charged that on March 21st, he forged a receipt for £3 8s Gd to £5 8s 6d. The police stated that there would probably be further charges. Accused was remanded to March 30th., on bail.
CITY RATES. CHRISTCHURCH. March 25Unpaid rates in the City total £31,000 out of a levy of £358.000. The total unpaid on the final day last year was £16,900. RETIRING. WELLINGTON, March 25. Mr Newton. Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, retires shortly on superannuation. ANOTHER LESSON. WELLINGTON, March 25. Eric John Banner, who ran into the train near Paekakariki on March 17th pleaded guilty to-day to an unlawful conversion of a car valued at £265,, the property of A. AY. H. Tillev. and he was sentenced by Mr Page. S.M., to three months. He had previously been placed on three years probation for two similar crimes, and Mr Page remarked he did not seem to have learned his lesson. The car was stated to have, been damaged to the extent of from £IOO to £l5O.
