Tuk Unemployment Board is extending its number 5 scheme until the end of April, and is considering the advance planning of work by local bodies and “the encouragement of reproductive work in rural areas.” Number 5 scheme has certainly provided work for a large number of men, but there are grave doubts as to the quality of much of the labour that is thus given to the community and as to the justification for many of the improvements so made. The value of the planning of local body work three years ahead will depend upon the nature of the works scheduled. One weakness in the present, policy is that it provides for works that are not really necessary. The Board is on firmer ground wiicn it turns to such a scheme as clearing Crown Lands and reconditioning abandoned farms. This is genuinely reproductive work. The Government and the Board are entitled to reasonable time to make plans for these operations. but the public has a right to expect something definite soon. Meanwhile the Board is tightening up the conditions under the No. o scheme. Those entitled to employment arc being defined more definitely, and doubtless for the future each applicant’s position will' be investigated more closely. In order to have uniformity in this matter among the local bodies, the local Unemployment Committee is to meet next week and agree to unison of action, so that all cases "ill he dealt with on uniform lines,

Nominations for all events at the Hokitika race meeting (Wednesday, April Bth) close with the Secretary at 8.30 oil Thursday evening next. The programme includes two trotting events. Of the remaining six galloping events, there is a race for maidens and also a. Hack race. The course is in the usual excellent order. A visiting owner this week commented very favourably indeed 011 the conditions of the running track. Next Friday afternoon the rights to two publicans’ booths for 'th c race meeting will be sold by auction by Jeffries and Coy.
The Napier “Telegraph” says:— Numbers of small holes which can be observed in the glass window* fronting the Uuwkes Bay Farmers’ office and garage premises in Dickens street, Napier, were not caused during the time of the big unheaval. Tho windows referred to wore quite intact, but have since been damaged by blasting operations carried out on the other side of the street. As the result of incidents which occurred at South Beach on Thmsday evening, Thomas Patrick Lalor was arrested. He appeared at the Greymouth Court yesterday, before Mr A. Naylor. J.P., and was charged with assaulting William Hamilton Hewlett, and resisting Sergeant Smyth in the execution of his duly. 111 asking 101 a remand until Monday. Senior-Ser-geant Roach stated that the police were not, ready to proceed with the case, as witnesses had to he procured. Mr J. W. Hannan, who appeared for accused, asked for bail, and this was fixed at self £2O and one surety of £2O, which was forthcoming.
Speaking in the House on Thursday, Mr Black, member for Motuoka, in the course of his remark# stated in l ele'enee to Public Service Commissioner control that the administrative heads when the control was brought in the first year, 1913, cost New Zealand £16,950 and in 1.930, £42,415; that the first report of the Public Service Commissioner showed that in 1913 £900,621 was paid in salaries and that of 1929 showed £2,260,000. Mr Baseand, Assistant Engineer, Public Works Department, at Westport states that as from April Ist the earthquake damaged section of the Westport-Karamea Main Highway between Mokihinui and Little Wanganui, which has been under reconstruction, and which on that account has been open for traffic only on certain days, will be re-opened to traffic continuordly. Very little slipping took place during the heavy rains ol the last few mojitos, which is very reassuring, but the travelling public are nevertheless warned to take all care during very wet weather. Reconstruction work has by no means been completed yet and it will be found neocssary on occasions to close the road for a few hours or a day or so. Such occasions will he limited a«s far as possible and as usual due notice of intention to close the road will be given.
