THE COUNCIL. ! ( By Telei’ivph —Per Brest Associu tion) WELLINGTON, -March 20. I[i tlie Legislative Council yesteiday, Hon E. H. Clark was elected Chairman of Committees. Resuming the debate on the address. in-reply, Hon. Fagan congratulated Sir E. !). Hell on his attack on the Government's proposals. He agreed that the budget should be balanced, but disagreed with the methods that the Government proposed to adopt. He was particularly opposed to the ten per cent cut and the proposal to give the Court power to revise awards. Hon. McCollum expressed the opinion that then' were hundreds oi civil servants who were grossly overpaid. He was opposed to the proposal to hand the railways over to an outside Board The Council adjourned at 4.-In p.m. until to-day. THE HOUSE. In the House of Representatives the debate on the second reading of me Finance Bill was continued. Among the speakers was the Minister o( Railways. who stated he still agreed the the road to prosperity was not to he found along the line of reduced wages, but in the present circumstances the Government was faced with the hard fact that it was impossible to find the 1 money to continue the present rates. | J-|o Imped the Government would soon | be in a position to restore what it was forced to take away to-day.
The Minister of Education said he believed a reduction of costs would expedite recovery from the present depression. Mr Jordan moved an amendment that the House declined to give a second reading to the Bill, which failed to meet the Dominion’s financial obligation. by means of a graded imposition of taxation in accordance with the citizens ability to pay. Tn support of the amendment, he advocated a substantial increase in the duty on petrol, by which means be maintained. the Government could obtain sufficient revenue and avoid reductions in civil servants salaries, a.’id pointed out that if importers profits were limited to threepence per gallon, it would he unnecessary to increase the price to consumers, and possibly reduce the
price - Mr Mason seconded the amendment. The debate was adjourned and the House rose at midnight.
