GRADUATED WAGE REDUCTION
Deaiing with suggestions for a graduated cut in wages, Mr Forbes in Parliament, said one scheme providing for exemption below £2OO salaries, five per cent, off £2OO to £soo', ten per cent, off £SOO to £I,OOO, 20 per cent, off £I,OOO and over would yield £OBB,OOO. Another scheme lor five per cent, off £250 and under, 71 per cent, off £250 ;to £450, 10 per cent, off £450 to £750, 15 per cent, off £750 and over would yield £933,000, whereas under the universal ten per cent, cut the revenue was expected to be £1,391,000.
Mr H. E. Holland: Have you considered a graduated tax on incomes?
Mr Forbes: No. But after the salary cuts are disposed of, the income-tax increases would be brought down.
A Reform questioner: How much ? Mr Forbes made no reply.
