SCHOOL VACATED

PALMERSTON X.. March 19,
Following reports bv the Board’s architect and structural engineersof the Public Works Department,, the Wanganui Education Board deemed it advisable to suggest that the Central School at Palmerston North, a large brick building, be vacated. The Minister of Education alter consultation with the Public Works Department adopted the suggestion and the school has been evacuated to-dav. Pending a decision regarding structural alterations, other accommodation is being found lor six hundred pupils. A FIRE. OISBORNE. March 19. A lire completely destroyed a nine roomed house, owned by J. Preston and occupied by his manager. R. Brayson. at Manutuke. A fine collection of war trophies and many valuable paintings were lost. Insurances in New Zealand Office £IOOO on house, £550 on contents and £SO on piano. BOXER RETIRES. HASTINGS, March 19While training on Monday evening in preparation to fight Thompson at Hastings on Easter Saturday, Artie Hay, the holder of the welter, middle, light, and heavy professional boxing titles was taken ill and bad to seek medical aid. His doctor advised him to retire and he has accordingly handed in his three titles. HOUSE BURNT. HASTINGS, March ID. A fiv<, roomed house owned by Frank E. Smith of Hastings, and occupied bv J. I,ueus, was totally destroyed by fire at three o’clock this morning. Lucas and family were sleeping in a tent outside and were awakened by the noise of the flames. The origin is unknown. The house was insured for £750 and furniture was insured for £250. A ROGUE. DUNEDIN. March 19. Alfred Graham, 65. was sentenced to three months gaol for being a rogue and vagabond, in that he solicited contributions by falsely representing tickets which he offered for sale were in aid of the earthquake relief fund. It was stated that accused had five thousand tickets printed, which he sold round the town.
