PROFESSOR SHELLEY HONOURED

A CARNEGJE FELLOAVSHIP, AN OFFER. FROAI AMERICA. CHRISTCHURCH, Alarch 17. Professor James Shelley, Professor of Education at Canterbury College, has boon offered a travelling fellowship of tbe Carnegie Institute, of New York, by which he is entitled to a special term of travel and study. A grant of £SOO goes with the fellowship, but there are no restrictions as to where it is to bo used. Such offers have been rare in the Dominion, though there have been previous cases. The Institute was founded by Air Carnegie for the purpose of developing international interest in academic subjects and for this purpose the fellowships are awarded at various times.

Tn an interview yesterday, Professor Shelley said that he did not know whether he would take advantage of the Carnegie travelling fellowship or not. He explained that the aim of this fellowship was to allow individuals chosen by the Institute to travel in various parts of the world, but there were no conditions whatever attached to it. AVhen the International Bureau of Education in the United States of America, learned that he had been offered the Fellowship, it had written him suggesting that he should tour tbe States and give lectures which it would arrange. Columbia University had also applied for his services but, said the Professor, “T have not decided whether I will take advantage of the Fellowship or not. My work here, T think, is more important.” Professor Shelley added that Professor Thompson, of Otago University bad also been granted a- fellowship and he would probably be using it.
