FRANCE AND ITALY
CORDIAL NEGOTIATIONS
PARIS PRESS SUSPICIOUS,
rtJsiitwi Frees Association.—By Electrlo Telogr&pfe,~*>Cvpynght. j PARIS, March 16. Signor Gandi, the Jtalian Foreign Secetary’s latest speech, has found no 'acho here. The French newspapers comment on it cautiously. They express surprise that Signor Gandi made no mention of the Franco-ltalian negotiations to settle the two nations’ differences which the French- Ahmassador at Rome has opened with the Italian Foreign Office. The French press is also suspicious at Signor Gandi’s conciliatory tone regarding disarmament. Signor Gandi’s pacifism is regarded ns rather a rapid conversion from Signor .Mussolini’s militarism. Nevertheless, the. Fraco-Jtalian negotiations are proceeding cordially. It is stated that the French are offering considerable concessions to Italy respecting the North African frontiers, and that France expects Italy to reciprocate by not fostering a separate Italian State at Tunis.
