Criticising the class of furniture in use in primary schools, Mr L, F, do llcrry said at the animal meeting of the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, that dual desks afforded the greatest possible drag on classroom organisation. He knew of no case where both children sitting at a dual desk did so in comfort. Some school furniture made the children feel as comfortable as if they wore in the stocks. From the amount of comment current, it would appear all the town purposes patronising the big Community Sing-Song at the Princess Theatre on Thursday night, the occasion being a benefit for the Hnwkes Bay Earthquake Fund, lit wiil he the final function locally in the raising of funds, as all lists close on Tuesday. 24 March and returns are to he in by the 31st just. In connection with Thursday's concert, the whole of the takings go to the fund, there being no expenses to charge against tile receipts. Admission will be only one shilling to all parts of the house. The entertainment promises to be an outstanding one, as an exceptionally good concert programme will be given also.

An accident happened on the Kokatalu road yesterday morning to a motor ear which was drvion by Mrs MacDonald of Koitorangi. Skidding in some loose gravel, the car left tho road and overturned into a deep ditch alongside the road. Of the. occupants Air J. Harris suffered a scalp wound, necessitating seven stitches, while, the other occupants also suffered abrasions and bruises.

The licensee of the Nelson Creek Hotel, Air George Findlay, aged 62 years, was found drowned in Nelson Creek on Saturday afternoon. The deceased, who was a native of Biehmond, Christchurch, only took over the lease of the hotel from Air Hendren. on Thursday, on which day lie arrived from Christchurch, where he was for about eleven years, an employee of Swanson’s timber merchants, and was well-known as "major.” On Saturday morning, the late Air Findlay went for a walk down the road in the direction of Ngaliew and later, upon beingmissed. a search party set out, and the deceased was found drowned at the creek in 16 inches of water, he apparently having a bad heart seizure and collapsed whilst strolling along the edge of the stream. An inquest was held in the afternoon when tile jury returned a verdict that deceased met his death by accidental drowning. The jury added that they wore of the opinion from the medical evidence, that the state of lion till of the deceased was such, that finding himself on the edge of a stream, lie probable had a. sudden stroke, such as would confuse his sense of direction and cause him to wander into tho stream, in which he collapsed before reaching the other side.
