WANAKA NOTES

(From a Corrcspoiiuenb)

At Hu’' monthly meeting ol' the Otago Expansion League hold in Dunedin on Tuesday, one oi the principal subjects discussed was a report received h v the President that there was a liivelihood ol work ceasing on the Hawea-.Makarora Hoad when the formation readied Makarora wliarl. Ibis was regarded as a most unfortunate position and members expressed themselves as disappointed. It was pointed out. that the dream of all well wishers of Otago has been the connection with South Westland, and the road under construction gives that promise'. To stop at .Makarora would nullity all the benefits to be derived, because it is the timber country beyond the Pass which will make the road valuable. The secretary was accordingly instructed to communicate with the M inister of Public \\ orks and press strongly for the continuation of the road work. When it i.s realised how near are the untouched timber forests of South Westland to the wide spaces ol Central Otago where one can speed over •the country for miles without seeing a solitary tree, the utmost importance and urgency of the road is_ strikingly, apparent. Then again the wide riv<.r fiats might then become occupied and made productive for dairying. The stalking season promises to. bean unusual'ly_ <|-tiiet one as only four parties will cross into Westland, and no licenses have been issued for Otago blocks.

Deer culling operations for Otago (Makarova Valley) and South Westland have also ceased. A few prospecting parties are preparing to enter Southern Westland.

Two and a half miles of road requires to be completed before .Maltacorn is made accessible by road with the remainder of Otago. The advance camp is now established at Makarora wliarl.

Public W'orks Engineer, Hall, and assistant Engineer, Lindrup, and a surveyor will cross into Westland this week to submit a report upon the survey, etc.
