The Court dismissed the appeal of Gilbert Belfus agaiiis tthe Registrai of Companies for his refusal to register in England the Irish Hospitals Sweep Limited. In the course of the argument, Mr Justice Swift asked: “Do you suggest that if any Dominion Parliament passed an Act legalising sweepstakes, they would be lawful in Britain?” -Mr Belfus replied: “I do.” Mr Justice Hewart remarked: “Have you imagined what will happen if the Imperial Parliament undertook to say what would be lawful in the Irish Free State?” Sir W. Jowitt (Attorney-General), apearing on behalf of the 'Registrar of Companies, declared that it. was inconceivable that the domestic law of one part of the Empire should regulate conduct of citizens living iti another part.
