Referring with regret in his report to the Christchurch Fire Board to the approaching resignation of Captain T. Hugo, inspector of Fire Brigades, Superintendent C. C. Warner stated that the Government did not consider the fire service of the Dominion of sufficient importance to continue the appointment of a “specialist” as bis successor, A letter was read from the Minister of Internal Affairs informing the hoard of Captain Hugo’s resignation. 'The Minister stated that, as an economy measure, no fresh appointment would he made, but Afr R. Girling Butcher, Inspector of Explosives. would carry out the duties in the meantime. Stating that a special i-t could not be appointed just now, the Minister declared that the appointment of a technical officer such as Afr Butcher was the most satisfactory arrangement under the circumstances. The letter was received.
