FIRE BRIGADES
CONFERENCE OPENS. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) NELSON, March 9. The fifty-second Annual Conference ot the l niled Fire Brigades’ Association ol New Zealand, opened here today. The President, Superintendent P. Deere, of the Greyniouth Brigade, in his address, expressed the sympathy of the Association with the Hawkes Bay earthquake sufferers. The annual report stated that 138 brigades are now affiliated. The retirement of Inspector Hugo was noted with extreme regret, warm tributes being paid to his efforts. ’Fhe import stated the formation of the New Zealand Institute was the greatest step forward in the hisory of the brigades, and that there was no reason why the members should not he able to Fill any position in the fire service. Nlr Miller, lor tip. underwriters, expressed appreciation for the past year’s work, especially that of the Napier and Hastings Brigades. The delegates were aceorded a civic recent ion.
