CONVERSION OF MOTOR CARS

GREATER PENALTIES [WANTED. WELLINGTON, March 6. “It is time the law was brought up to present-day requirements,” declared Mr A. Grayson (Auckland), at to-dav ! s meeting of the North Island Motor Union, when the question of increasing the penalty for the conversion of motor ears was under discussion. The discussion was inaugurated as the result of a letter from the South Island Union, in which it was suggested that further representations should be made by 1 the two unions asking that the law be amended to provide that power be given to magistrates to deal with cases of theft or conversion of motor cars without the right of the offender to be tried by a jury. This, iV was contended, would lessen the risk of an offender not being convicted, and would reduce the cost of prosecution.

The South Island Union enclosed a copy of a letter received from the Minister of Justice. In this the Minister stated that to make the offence of stealing motor vehicles an indictable on e would not only enormously increase the cost of prosecutions, but would also decrease the number of convictions. It was not considered desirable to amend the law in that way.

The meeting decided to support the South Island Union in making further representations along the lines suggested.
