SERVICES CURTAILED

CANADIAN STEAMSHIP LINE. AUCKLAND, March 6. Owing to the slackness of trade the Canadian National Steamships Line is curtailing its services from Eastern Canada to New Zealand and Australia. For some years it has been running separate cargo services between Canada and New Zealand and Canada and Australia, but trade lias decreased to such an extent that one time-table will be arranged to serve both New Zealand and Australia. The service to New Zealand was a four-weekly one, with additional steamers occasionally, calling at Auckland to discharge- on route to Australia. The connexion between Canada and Australia was on the same basis. Steamers calling at Now Zealand discharged at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timani, and Dunedin, and sometimes at- Bluff, in that order. Foj- the return voyage they loaded at South Island ports and afterwards at Wellington and Auckland, leaving Auckland finally for Canada, via New York and Boston.

It is announced that in future a steamer Avill leave Haliiax or Montreal, according to the season, every month, instead of every four weeks, and will call at New Zetland ports before proceeding to Australia to complete discharge. The discharging ports will he Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne, Sydney. and Brisbane, while in New Zealand the vessels will load for New York, Boston, and Halifax or Montreal as usual, but they will proceed to those ports from Australia.

'|'he first .steamer in the new service is the Canadian Conqueror. wliieh left Halifax for Auckland on March 3rd. She will lie followed by the Canadian Britisher, to leave Halifax on March 30th. The Canadian Highlander, which arrived at Auckland from Halifax on Thursday, will carry out the usual itinerary.
