The Mid-winter drought, which is nation wide in the extent of doing serious injury to crops and diminishing the water supply in many communities, including such large cities as New .York, was broken to-day when rain, and snow fell widely over the entire country.

Chicago suffered tfnom n blizzard and *1 gale, a foot of snow falling in Ilinimois,, lowa and Wisconsin. Michigan was similarly affected. The Mid-west grain 1 belt especially by the snow. The lower S' galleys of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers benetittod by the heavy rams. The storm extended as far soutli as Texas and Louis(|tra, where it also did considerable property damage. The Federal weather bureau stated that the drought, however, progressed to such an extent that the grain areas in the west will have to have at least foot more rain in the next two months to restore moisture to the subsoil and start the spring growing season properly.
