RKFORAIAS PROPOSAL. The main feature of Air Coates’ proposals is the preliminary breaking-in and preparation of the land through the agency of the State and its employees before the settler actually starts on his career as a primary producer. A very brief reference to the United Government’s land legislation shows that this special feature of land policy has already received careful attention from Alinisters, and as a matter of fact a considerable area of land was taken in. hand last year for treatment on these very lines. Whether any large proportion of the unemployed now congregated in the towns are fit for such work, or can carry it out successfully, can only bo proved by experiment,—Aucklnnd Star,
