EVFRYBPDYS PICTURES. TO-NIGHT AND TUESDAY. BEBE DANIELS SCORES WITH FINE DRAMATIC PERFORMANCE IN “ALIAS FRENCH GERTIE.” Radio Pictures’ newest vehicle ior Bebe Daniels, “Alias French Gertie,’ to-night and Tuesday at the Princess Theatre, reveals another amazing triumph for that already celebrated star of the audible celluloid. Distinguished for her genuinely illustrious performance as a singing sensation in Radio Pictures’ “Rio Rita,” Miss Daniels displays new and astonishing power as an actress of dramatic forcefillness in her role of a clever, female “racketeer.” “Alias French Gertie” may be considered Miss Daniels’ most serious characterisation in the talkies. Concerned with an expose of the smooth methods of high society crooks, the story, thrilling and vividly enacted, allows Miss Daniels broad scope for her latest talents as a dramatic player of distinction. The underworld atmosphere is startlingly real and exciting, and much of it is due to the splendid playing of the leading performers, Miss Daniels and Ben Lyon. This is Ben Lyon’s first appearance opposite the glamorous Bebe and spirited and sympathetic performances arc given hv the two. Bebe is portrayed in the dual role of a French maid arid crook. The port calls upon her to speak a good bit of French and the argot of the underworld. The picture reveals a smoothness which must be attributed to the fine direction of George Arohainbnud. With, a deftness which never, betrays itself it is so cleverly handled, the' dramatic situations build to a strong and satisfying denouement which rounds out a smartly done talking photoplay. Good supports. Prices 2/10, 1/6, children 6d downstairs.
