BOWLING

A BOWLING SURPRISE

To score eight points in one head in a rink bowling game is an unusual performance, and when it is achieved with all drawn shots it is particularly noteworthy. Til is was what happened in the game between a rink skipped by W. Efford, of the Edgeware Club, and one skipped by S. Hutchison, of the Balmacewan Club, Dunedin, in the match for the Redpatfc Shield on the St. Albans green oil Thursday. The Canterbury rink had been having a hard struggle against the Otago players until the sixteenth head, when, to the surprise of players and spectators, it was found that the Canterbury skip had scored the possible. The bowls were grouped closely together and it was not due to bad play on the part of the Otago rink that they failed to get into the head. From that stage the Canterbury rink had much the better of the game and they won by the substantial margin of thirteen points.
