EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND

LOCAL EFFORTS. The town and district are making a very worthy effort to aid the above fund, money tor which is needed to the fullest capacity of giving. Several of the country districts are doing very well. Inter-Wanganui has sent forward over £IOO, and Kokatahi over £6O. All centres are doing their part and the aggregate from the country should he a substantial sum. The copper trail now being carried thiuiipjli w.(c realise ,a large sum. The old adage about looking after the pennies is very true when applied to the copper trail. The distance round Cass Square is 2640 feet, and as there are ten pennies to a foot, 26,400 pennies are required to circle the ground. The value of such a contribution would he £TIO, so it shows what the school children could do if they put their hearts into their task. The ladies of the town are being well organised for the social afternon to be held on Wednesday next in the Soldiers’ Hall in aid of the fund. It will be a bring, give and buy occasion, made specially pleasant by a musical afternoon, with refreshments served free. Quite a pleasant afternoon is assured, and it is expected several country cousins will 1 attend to show practical appreciation in the good work in hand. The Hall will be made gay, while games, competitions mid Old English dances' will add to the variety of the programme and entertainment.. There is to be a gala night on Cass Square on Wednesday week, March 11, when a very fine novelty programme will he provided. On Saturday, March 14th. there will be a Paddy’s Market in Weld Street, and on Thursday 7, March 19tli. there is to he a big Community Sing Song at the Princess Theatre, for which quite a lot of special talent, is being unearthed. These special events on the programme should result in the Relief Fund being increased very substantially by the local community.
