BUTTER VERSUS MARGARINE
Writing of the British butter market as at January 9, our London correspondent said:— Onu eoiisecj'uene of these lower prices which has aroused much interest is tlie way in which butter lias been cutting into the sales of the better grades of margarine. Some grades had given way to butter by as much as 50 per cent. To combat this the margarine producers were said to he preparing a new line 1 to sell at 9d per lb, Now, I am told, owing to the uncertainty about butter prices, this has been postponed. From the statistical position prices should improve very materially in the next few weeks, as supplies are now greatly reduced. But the economic outlook does not augur well lor the consumption of butter at higher prices, and a number of importers are non laying their plans accordingly.
