A NEW “LAKE.” LIKELY TO SOON DISAPPEAR. (By Telegraph —Per Press Association) GISORNE, Feb. 25. A new lake is reported from Hustings. It is evidently a blockage of the Mohaka river, that "'as previously reported. he latest report is that water is now flowing over the obstruction. STARVING MAN PICKED UPGISBORNE, February 26A man in a state of starvation and evident distress was picked up on a road by a motorist and taken to Tolaga Bay Hospital. A nurse later going through the man s clothes was surprised to discover a bundle of Commercial Bank bills totalling £B4l. The man is apparently suffering some mental derangement. H Alt BO FILM ASTER RETIRES. WEI j LIN G TON, Febrita ry 26. Captain J. E. Dawson, harbourmaster at Wellington for nearly sixteen years, has resigned. Captain Dawson was granted special leave of absence on full pay for six months and his resignation will take effect from August 31. Captain J. Spence, deputy harbourmaster. Ii is been appointed acting harbourmaster. Captain Peterson acting deputy harbourmaster. Both appointments date from March 1. The question of permanent; appointments come up for decision at the ox< piration of si,x months from that date, DRAPERS’ WAGE REDUCTION. WELLINGTON, February 26. With reference to a telegram from Auckland, re the drapers’ wage reduction, the secretary of the Wellington Drapers’. Clothiers’, and Boot Retailors’ Association states: —That whilst it may he true that as the Association at Auckland has not taken action, this matter is most important, lo individual members of the Auckland Association, which lias effected a reduction along similar lines since December last. The Christchurch proposal referred to docs not provide for a reduction ol wages to the minimum award rates, but the reduction applies only to those higher paid assistants in receipt of more than the award rates. TWO BODIES IDENTIFIED. NAPIER, February 26. Two bodies previously buried have boon identified as follows: Mrs Emily Elizabeth Wells, wife of J. R. A Veils of Napier. Air Walter George Lunn, aged 25, married, of Napier. The weather is ffaie. Several small shocks were felt since 8 a.m. yesterday.
