EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND

EXECUTIVE MEETING.

The local Executive Committee met at the Town Hall last evening at 8 o’clock. Present: Messrs Perry (Mayor, in the chair). Breeze, Thorn, Ross, Richards, Duff, Evans, AloGavin, Jeffies, Bruce and Revd. Knights. Apology was made for the absence of Father Finerty.

Mr Bruce (secretary) reported there were now eight refugees from Hawke’s Bay district in Westjand. Three desiring repatriation, and approval being received from the committee at Napier, the necessary permit to return was issued.

The Tfeafcury wrote acknowledging the receipt of £548/18/6 on account of the Westland district contributions. The Secretary stated he had circulnrsied the schools in town and within a radius of the country, suggesting contributions to the copper trail, to be laid on Cass Square, commnecmg oil the 26th inst. It was understood the local schools were co-operating, and it was hoped to have the assistance of the country schools in raising funds by this means. The distance round the square was 2640 feet and it took about ten pennies to equal a foot of distance. The position of the head of the trad would be indicated by a flag, with a flag also at the starting point. The flag at the head would be advanced daily as tlm funds came in. The Secretary reported regarding the ladies’ meeting held lately and tho proposal to hold a social afternoon in the Soldiers’ Hall on the 4tTEx inst. arrangements for' which were now being advanced.

Constable Robb, Otira. reported that as he was going on special duty he would not be able to assist with a local collection.

Mr Evans reported that 88 lists had been sent into the country, ranging from Otira to Okuru. . Replies were being received of the operation. The first section of the Kokatahi list had been published, and a benefit dance was being organised there. Collecting was in hand at Koiterangi. Advice from Okarito stated that the list was at present at the Five Mile, Arahura was also collecting, and a dance was to be held at Toker’s Hall on the lltjj inst. It was anticipated a considerable sum would be raised throughout the country districts.

The Secretary stated a further contribution of £5/2/6 had been received from the Public Service Association.

It was reported the funds received so far totalled £Bll/1/9. Tt was decided to remit a further £250 to the Prime Minister Fund. The following additional fixtures to raise funds were agreed to: —

March 11, Gala Night at Cass Square commencing at 7 o’clock with cycle faces, display bv Ladies Athletic Club. Guides and Scouts, National dancing, flmwofks, and side shows. Admission t.o ho <wm shilling, school children free. Hand to bo invited, and the Jwinicri Electric Coy to bo asked to assist with illuminations, Messrs Duff. McGayin, Thom, and Evans to he the organising committee, with power to add to their number ; Messrs McGregor and Davidson to take charge of the National dancing. March 14, Paddy’s Market in Weld Street, organisers Messrs Jeffries, McGayin and Thorn, with power to add. Gifts for sale of all kinds of produce stock, home made goods, and gifts generally will be accepted. March 19, Promenade Concert ant! community sing at the Princess Theatre (kindly placed at disposal by Everybody’s Pictures). Committee. Messrs Evans, Richards, and Ross, with power to add. Admission, on ; ’ shilling to all parts, children hah price. Choirs to be asked to assist with community singing. Humor otm items to be provided by visitors and others.

The Chairman thought they had a full programme ahead, and with the hearty co-operation of the people th~ fund, needing all the help they could give, should benefit greatly. The meeting rose at 8.40 o’clock.
