GRAPE GROWERS PROTEST. (United Proas Association. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). (Received LI.IO a.m.) OTTAWA. Tebrimry ;24.
A' message from Toronto states protests against the present system of selling native wine on liquor permits, and fears of competition by Australian wine and grape juice were voiced before the Agricultural Committee of Ontario Legislature, by Ontario grape, growers. A reduction oi duty under the terms of the New Australian Treaty mi Australian wine and the elimination of a duty on Australian grapes, would work to the disadvantage of grape growers, the delegation declared. The removal of the restriction on the use of fruit extracts and the manufacture of Ontario wine was advocated, it being stated Australian wine was made with fruit extracts, and had a high alcholic content. Ontario nroduoers had to import large quantities of stigor. The extensive importation of grnnes from Australia would ho absolutely disastrous to Niagara Peninsular growers. It was stated two courses were advocated, the maintenance of protective duties and advertising and propaganda to develop Canadian markets.
