CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board met at Christchurch on Friday last. Those present were: — Messrs \V. A. Banks (.chairman), R. Wild, H. J. Bignell 5 G. W. Armitage, J. J. Hurley, ,J. >v. Preen, \\. P. Spencer, C. S. Thompson, S. 11. Evison, J. G. Gow, iS. timitn and W. Johnson. Appointments made included: — Camerons, Miss K. Creagli, headteacher. Kmnara Junction, Mr 'J'. Kelly, sole teacher (transfer). The following resignations were accepted:—Blaketown, Miss G. T. Cliarles. SCHOOL BUILDINGS. Application was received from Karangarua (South Westland) for the establishment of a household schcol 3 and it was resolved to submit the application to the Department for favourable consideration when necessary details come to hand. Kokatahi.—Report and correspondence were received regarding the acceptance of J. Shivns's tender at £l9B per annum.

REPORTS OF BUILDINGS The Buildings Committee reported dealing with the following matters;— Dobson (West Coast) —The Commit, tee wrote asking the board to support an application to the Unemployment Board for a grant of £l2 towards the formation of n basketball court at th® school. The secretary reported that under the No. 5 scheme it was not possible to obtain cash subsidies, It was resolved, therefore, to make a grant of,£6 in aid of the carrying out of the work, Docherty’s Creek (Went Coast)—A memorandum was received from the department advising tliat the proposal to erect a school ‘building in this district had definitely been declined. The Appointments Committee reported that a letter had been received from the Education Department regarding a proposal that the long summer vacation should be held in February instead of December and January. It had been resolved to reply tliat the Uourd was not in favour of such a change. It was resolved to place on record the Board’s appreciation of the services rendered and active interest displayed by members of the draining College Staff and other teachers during the vacation in connection with the Summer School and voluntary courses arranged by local institutes. A memorandum was read from the Kumara Committee advising the Board that a school garden has now been established.

It was decided to refer the letter to the Agricultural Instructor so that an immediate start may be made with the agricultural programme of work at this school, OVERSEER’S REPORT. Arahurn Road School.—At this school the renewal of the spouting apcl downpipes is pow finished. The painters are painting bqth (he interior and exterior qf school. Most of the exterior work ia finished and the interior will b e completed in a few dayp. When the painting of the school is finished I intend to proceed with the renovations to th® Teacher’s Residence.

Wefieka School.—'The joinery for this school is now finished, The sawmiller line the timber out nnd ready to deliver, At the present time the road to Weheka is blocked but directly traffic can proceed through I will commence the erection of this school. Hokitika School. —Painting shelter sheds. Directly the painters are finished at Arahura Road I intend to proceed with the painting of the above named shelter shed/t
