FEDERAL POLITICS

PRESS OPINIONS. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, February 23. The “Telegraph” says Mr Scullin has summoned a special Cabinet meeting for this afternoon. All Ministers, except Mr Beasley who was not invited. have responded. Beasley remains in Svdnev.

Little is known as to the significance of Beasley's exclusion, but it is learned lie is determined not to tender his resignation voluntarily. Observers, according to the “Telegraph” are of the opinion that the fall of the Scullin Cabinet is imminent. The State Australian Labour Party President, Graves, says lie is in the dark but the State Executive stand firmly behind Beasley in bis efforts to advance the Australian Labour Party policy in connection with East Sydney, bye-election. It is stated that two courses may open for Scullin, firstly to ask the the caucus to instruct him to reconstruct a Cabinet without Beasley; secondly to act independently, return his commission and ask the Governor General to commission him for a fresh Ministry. In the latter case Messrs Ans ley and Blakeley would be dropped as well as Beasley. The “Herald” says:—Tbe Federal caucus proposes a meeting to be held at Sydney before the East Sydney bye-election at which Messrs Scullin and Theodore will define the Federal Government’s financial policy in order to counter the serious effect of the State Australian Party’s support following the proposals of the Federal executive.

A. member declared last night that the Federal Government would welcome Ward’s defeat in Fast Sydney, whereas his election signifying the approval of the Lang plan would mean an curly General Election.
