PORT IMPROVEMENT

DEFINITE SCHEME FOR NELSON. NELSON, February 13. The Nelson Harbour Hoard intends to have prepared before the elections lin May a definite harbour improveI meat scheme as a guide for future boards. Reports have been made by the engineers, and it is probable that by the next meeting of the board the announcement of a definite scheme of widening and deepening the entrance will he made. Mr R. Vickerman, consulting engineer, attended the last meeting of the hoard. In the morning he had inspected the entrance. taking soundings, and considered there would he no difficulty in widening the “cut” by 100 feet and deepening it by five feet. This work could be done by the dragline method which had been used successfully at Napier recently. In regard to the proposed mole on the northern side of the entrance, the engineer considered it would he best to carry out the deepening first to see if the mole could be done without. A mole on the northern side would probably be necessary in the future, but not fur some time. He thought part of the trouble with the entrance was that at present the water hacked up on the tides, making a difference in the waiter .levels inside and outside the harbour. The water then bubbled through. Mr Vickerman is to consult with Mr L. Reynolds on the subject.
